Nearly late, but not quite!

Probable Must Watches

Monogatari (III)

2013JUL-Mongatari

Well, naturally this is the top of my list. It was teaser’ed at the end of the Nekomonogatari movie earlier in the year. I’m a little concerned that its covering more books than its predecessor series, but I also haven’t read those, so maybe it’ll all be ok. Anyway, it’ll involve Mr. Shinbo’s psychotic direction again no doubt; but thats ok, its real strength lies with its unconventional approach and its philosophy. The action, cute girls, and Araragi being an awesome lead male character are just icing on its cake. Of course, Nisemonogatari has us wondering about how he’s going to keep the harem maintained. Sengoku is especially a powder keg waiting to explode.

However, I am kinda annoyed they STILL HAVE NOT DONE the Kizumonogatari movie, which we were waiting for back when they released Nisemonogatari, never mind a year later for this. The prequel backstory on Araragi becoming a Vampire and the backdrop for his relationship with Shinobu is kind of important. Fortunately, the book is translated HERE, thanks to Baka-Tsuki, so go read it if you haven’t already.

Fate/Prisma Illya

2013JUL-Ilya

A gaiden/side story for FSN that naturally focuses on the sillier aspects! This an alternate universe where Iris and Kiritsugu (from Fate/Zero) are living like a (vaguely) normal family with their children Illya and Shirou. At least, until Rin and Luvia, who are magical girls in this setting, are abandoned my their magical sticks (of Zeltretch!) because they’re always fighting each other rather than doing their jobs properly. Naturally, one of the sticks chooses Illya as its new master, and tutored by Rin, she is thrown into a quest to retrieve the escaped Servant Cards, which like in Cardcaptor Sakura, give her various powers later.

I’m a little concerned that the preview focused entirely on the moe element though. You shouldn’t expect deepness of Illya, but it’ll be a nice, lighthearted romp paying homage to every standard magical girl trope in the book, just with FSN characters and settings. A guilty pleasure, if you will.

Cautiously Optimistic About

The Neptunia Anime

2013JUL-Nep

Everyone’s favourite niche console-wars piss-take PS3 game is finally getting itself an anime. All of the main girls in the foreground above are goddesses of the video-games industry and represent consoles and handhelds, including the never-released Sega Neptune and Nepgear.

Frankly, the first game was pretty freaking terrible with comatose inducing battles and plenty of grinding barely buoyed by an average plot, but the second was a nice reboot of the franchise, and Victory (recently released) has continued the trend of being decent. It’s been basically confirmed that this is an original story though, rather than an anime adaptation of one of the games.

Kami Sama no Inai Nichiyoubi

2013JUL-Kamisamaaka. “And so god abandoned this world on Sunday”. Follows a loli-gravekeeper (!) in a world where no one new is born. She has prepared 47 graves for her village just in time for a serial killer to come around and slaughter them all. It also just so happens this man may well be her father.

Err… yeah… talk about morbid descriptions of an anime, eh? In any case, its based on an award winning novel, so perhaps it could be interesting.

Uchouten Kazoku
2013JUL-UchoutenPA Works doing an anime in a world where humans and Tanuki live side by side? That could be marginally interesting. Though they’ve been a little less inspiring lately; TariTari was merely solid rather than excellent.

Well, in any case, I’ll be giving it a look.

Maybe worth a look

Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaete mo Omaera ga Warui
aka. “It’s not my fault I’m Unpopular”. Apparently it has /a/ on 4chan to thank for its popularity. That isn’t exactly… comforting; though the concept has potential.

Kin’iro Mosaic
Oh my: “The Japanese/British girls’ mixed comedy follows the lives of Shinobu, Alice, and other girls from both Japan and Great Britain.” Mainly this is here because I’m interested in how much fail they can pack in their representation of Britain. It may shoot up my listings if it can handle the UK in a way that is funny without being hamfisted, since, being a brit, I love taking the piss out of my own country…

Servant x Service
A 4koma-ish anime about the civil service in Japan. Because that sounds SO BORING, who knows… it may actually work!

NO! Just NO!!!

Free!
Sparkling Bishounen go swimming…

Inu to Hasami wa Tsukiyou
A dog… and girl wielding scissors… (sigh)…

Kimi no Iru Machi
I’ve heard too much horror about the manga…

Fantasista DollRozen Maidens play Yi-Gi-Oh…

Quite a spread from bad to good I guess. There is more, but if I’ve not mentioned it, it’s probably so generic as not be worthy a mention, I’ve missed it, or it has very little information at this stage.

Hey everyone; apologies for my absence as of late; there has been alot less free-time available for me in general, since my hours at work recently increased alot; and I also purchased a copy of Rune Factory Frontier, which has been draining my time quite alot!

Within a couple of days I shall release a post for the new Winter 2010 Anime Season.

The draft is already started, so its just filling things in. Alot of pretty interesting stuff to look forward to.

Anyway, until then, here’s just a very brief post tonight with my two new wallpapers:

First up; its Aya Oshino. Not really a proper wall as more of a fairly quick photoshop:

As always, click the above to see it full size

Those whom have seen Bakemonogatari will probably recognise the above as Shinobu Oshino, the loli-vampire from that series. Basically, all I’ve done with these images is carefully alter their colour pallette. She was previously blonde, and is now pink haired.

The reason for this is because I recently started a new campaign for my RPG system, Aniventure, with a setting thats draws inspiration from Utsuro no Hako to Zero no Maria, Kagetsu Tohya, and Bakemonogatari. Most notably, the players are stuck in a Groundhog Day loop somewhat akin to the former two, and a world full of strange youkai somewhat like the latter, in an organisation that controls youkai.

Of course, they didn’t originally know this, and were told that they were in a simple high school setting, but have since figured out this is an illusion created by a Youkai, partly through aid of a strange transfer student, Aya Oshino. (whose name is mix of Aya Otonashi from ZeroMaria, and Shinobu Oshino from Bakemono, in tribute to both). This is the source of the character idea. I described her to have pink hair, and then made this to show them her looks, basically.

Anyway, they also figured out she’s a vampire, which is my reason for her breaking free of the groundhog loop and retaining her memories (though the players didn’t play them, their first gaming session was actually the 32nd loop of a certain day; and Aya has lived each one and remembered them all).

Secondly, we have my latest, a wall of Ryouko and Ryoushi from the Seven Friends of Ookami-san.

As always, click the above to see it full size

Another fairly simple job, taking these two vectors and making this, but one I rather enjoyed. I think the contrast between the cute Ryouko and determined Ryoushi is especially fun, since its sort of a reversal of their usual characters.

The Sakura patten just came pretty naturally to the equation, but it was rather difficult getting it to tile properly so it didn’t look atrocious since was not a naturally repeatable image. Theres actually about 14 tiles in there!

Thats all for now, but stay tuned.

Just a short post today, full of needless variety and pointless statements (yay?).

First of all, I’ve decided fairly fair and square that Kampher, Lost Property of the Sky and Kuuchuu Blank are almost invariably out of the runnings entirely for me this season and rather than forcing myself to do an angsting First Impressions post like I did with some shows last season, I’d rather just not.

Seitokai no Ichizone and 11 Eyes are also hanging precariously, almost relying a great next performance, and I still need to start Kimi no Todoke (though I’ve heard some horror stories about it). If they change my mind, these three shows may recieve a late preview. But in general, I think I’m actually pretty full already with the others.

Interestingly, even most of the shows I was into had a slight dip in their second episode this season, and others have also suddenly become good by the third episode. Nyan Koi and Railgun both had dubious follow ups to otherwise great first eps, only to pull themselves back out the mud for the third. Blacksmith continued mediocrity until suddenly introducing plot in the third ep and being moderately interesting. Bantorra the same, but replace Mediocrity with Confusion, which has suddenly cleared up a bit. Letter Bee was 70% angst and seriously grating my nerves until the third episode where it has suddenly been saved thanks to this:
LetterB-Underpants

As I predicted initially, the Loli is the shows savior. And she’ll probably get the monkeydragon next episode.

Kobato, I have to wonder about. She…is…so…damn…stupid… It makes you want to punch her. Her dog plush, Ioryogi, is pulling the shows entire weight at the moment, though I still have episode three to watch, so we’ll see.

In the meantime, you can have a new widescreen wallpaper. Its Shinobu-chan from Bakemonogatari:
jt-1440-Shinobu-Oshino

As always, click the above to see it full size.

I still maintain that Bakemonogatari was the best show of the Summer 2009 season. Great characters, actual plot development, and ye gads an actually satisfying ending (which is supreme rarity among at least 50% of anime, which seems to fizzle out or run out of time). Though Shinobu chan didn’t actually see much screentime, she was still a highly bemusing background presence. Awesome stuff.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and New Banner (squee!). I figured Shana has been doing the rounds for a year now, so I gave her a break, yeah? She’s been replaced with Ilya, Rin, Saber and Archer from F/SN. I know it isn’t anywhere close to cherry blossom season, but oh well…

Anyway, thats all for today. See ya again soon.

Yeah, I know, its a day late. Busy, busy, etc.

Well, I haven’t got a specific anime this time like I had with the K-ON spot the difference. So this is really a miscellaneous bunch of spot the difference exercises, mainly showcasing ridiculous things that have been found in the anime and games world recently. Its also hopefully funny and perhaps even marginally educational. (LIES!)

Exercise 1: A Loli wearing nothing but a copy of Zelda: Twilight Princess?
bakemono-webguys

Yup, The IGN guys even somehow managed to find their way into Bakemonogatari!

I had to rewind to see this again because I burst out laughing too hard.

The exercise here is to guess which part is causing the reaction. The Loli or the game?

I guess this meme has taken a life of its own. I believe they are known as bakagaijin on 2channel. Which is amusing.

Exercise 2: And behind magic curtain number 2, is… <drumroll>:
gendai-mahou-unfair-god

Its like that daft game of chance in Mario Party, where you just choose doors until you die. Except with curtains. And, uh, more lingeries.

Despite a ridiculously rushed and rather contrived ending, Gendai Yokou Mahou had its moments like this. It amazed me to see the curtains opening simultaneously apparently by Kaho’s telekinesis. She’s so hardcore, she doesn’t even have to look to know its going to be an unfair deity moment.

Speaking of mystery curtains, why aren’t there any cheesy gameshows on television anymore? Everybody loves the Price is Right and Strike It Lucky. Or am I just showing my age? (or perhaps my disgust at so called ‘reality television’, which is drivel in my opinion).

And I just see Yumiko being that obligatory girl modelling on the top prize sports car. LOL.

Exercise 3: Testing your Trap Detection capabilitiestrap-detection

Yessiree, you have 5 seconds to decide which of the above is male, and which is female.

Times up! Answers on a postcard to the comment box.

Gotta Love Maria+Holic. Easily one of my favourite shows of the season it was in. Mainly because it was just innately WRONG, I suppose. And no, the above is not a trick question at all, which you will understand if you have actually watched the anime. One of the above is Maria, and one of the above is Shizu. One is a trap, the other is a reverse trap.

See, reading blogs is not a waste of time. This is actually developing survival skills! (well, survival skills for watching anime, anyway)

Exercise 4: Learning to play the pure/vile maiden guitar?Maria-vs-Yui

With you powers combined, I…AM…Captain Gibson!

Which do you think makes a better riff, Mio’s Panties or Matsurika’s Bloomers? Both are instruments of the finest caliber? Its hard to say, isn’t it? I guess some of these exercises are a bit mean. Sorry.

LOL, this combines the old and the new. That is to say, I managed to stuff some K-ON in here again, and double the Maria+Holic for double the fun.

Exercise 5: King of Heroes and Queen of Gaps: A match made in hell?Gap-of-Gensyoko-vs-Gate-of-Babylon

Yukari vs. Gilgamesh. Gap of Gensyoko vs. Gate of Babylon.

Holy cow, I’d pay good money to see that fight. But I don’t have to, as it is happening right above as I speak.

In before causing a storm of excrement, who wins? I imagine its a standstill. Depends on how many Flandres can be pulled out and their effectiveness against the blast of Ea. Are the roadsigns epic artefacts in same realm as noble phantasms? I’m sure Yukari thinks so.

Exercise 6: And we’ll be right back after this…

Lets go full circle to finish and close up with another comment from our new friends, the IGN bakagaijin guys!
finish-yoake-mae-yoriruri-iro-na

Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na’s anime adaption was one of those that makes you lose your faith in humanity. I mean, everyone can tolerate some animation cuts, but the animation in this was…sheer eye cancer. The above shot of the Anime Feena is actually a pretty good shot as far as some of them go. The anime is legendary for the slanting eyes of doom and the never ending lettuce of death. So much so, it became known as Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na: Cabbage Love among more cynical 2channel viewers.

And of course, considering how amazing the ingame art is, many fans of everyones favourite lunar princess died a little inside that day.

Its also one of the reasons that I am VERY wary of most dating game adaptations these days. They can be done right, like with Akane Iro Somaru Saka. But more often than not, they can be done wrong. Very wrong, like the above. And VERY, very wrong, like the soul crushing travesty that is Da Capo Second Season.

Anyway, thats all for now. I’ve exhausted all the spot exercises I could think of! Enjoy!

Yikes, has it really been eleven days since I posted last? Shocking. I’ve been doing alot of overtime at work, so there’s not been alot spare to even think about blogging. Apologies!

Anyways, we’re roughly halfway through the summer 2009 Anime season now (its around episode 6-7 territory), so I thought it was time for the usual ‘what I’m watching and what’s been good and other rants etc.’ type post.

A warning in Advance: SPOILERS AHOY!

CANAAN

Well, considering how excited I was at the start of the season for CANAAN, I have to say its been in a gradual decline, generally speaking, since its opening act. Maria has said ‘Sugoi!’ far too many times to be a regular person, and Canaan herself stopping a Smart bomb from hitting the right spot was a little silly. Not to mention the fact that they allowed the villians security company to mediate the proceedings of a Peace Talk EVEN when THEY KNEW it was a cover operation for their terrorist activities. Thats just immense stupidity, surely. However…now that theres less sister yuri going on and perhaps an actual bit of development of the plot, things may begin to look up again for the series.

ms-canaan1

Clearly, a reliable source. Apparently this is enough to convince the vice president to launch an airstrike though. Seriously, WHAT!?

ms-canaan2

You don’t say… You have to admire his strength though, completely resisting a bunch of swat team members.

ms-canaan3

Good lord Maria, I think your job description is to secretly provide excess fanservice, isn’t it?

Princess Lover

I’m quite happy to declare that, assuming one ignores the hiccup of stupidity that is Episode 6, Princess Lover is perhaps one of the best Harem shows I have seen in all time. Teppai is a very strong, confident male lead. I can actually manage to bring myself to respect his character. Considering nearly all protagonists of these kind of shows turn out to be gutless idiots, this is a fabulous improvement. Charlotte is…okay. She is the irritating airhead archetype, but her natural bravado saves her a little. Sylvie is still quite literally Saber with chest implants. Seika is a typical tsundere. So his harem is fairly generic, but above average as well.

ms-plover3

He resolved the Seika situation (that is to say, her innate hate of his family) rather well. Looks like a bribe in this pic though, LOL.

ms-plover1

Charlotte does the puppy dog eyes on Sylvie.

ms-plover2

Hideki! Hideki! Hideki! Hideki! (poorly disguised Chobits reference…)

Bakemonogatari

Now this has gone from strength to strength, making it quite possibly my favourite show at the moment this season. Again, the fact that Araragi is a great male lead really helps the show, but in this case, unlike Princess Lover, the girls are very unique as well. You’d think that with Senjogahara setting such a high bar with her pocket dimension of stationary, that others couldn’t measure, but that hardly seems the case. More interestingly, the fact that Araragi has already chosen (or maybe, chosen by) Senjogahara is rather refreshing. No angsting over relationships here, no sir-ree. The main couple are already going out. Progress in relationships!? In an anime!? SHOCKING!

ms-bakemono1

Good on you, sir! But think about cutting that fringe of hair, yes?

ms-bakemono2

Considering that Araragi is your first boyfriend, this statement is rather unnecessary. Though it just highlights her violent possessive character, I guess.

ms-bakemono3

Assuming it isn’t obvious, from scenes like this. You cheat on this girl, she stabs you in the eye with a fineliner. Its probably a good thing that he still has his vampire regeneration, eh?

ms-bakemono4

Especially when this happens. Ouch.

Spice and Wolf Second Season

Good to get into this again, though in actual fact, I blitzed the episodes 3-6 in a short marathon, because I knew this would cover the part of the novels which I had already read on the Baka-Tsuki Fan Translations site. Nevertheless, they covered that section very well and I thought it was very nice to see it animated. Whats more, its a great relationship development exercise for Lawrence and Horo as well as the usual test of his and her merchantile partnership and capabilities. The result of this development is shown quite evidently in episode 7. Again, relationship development in my anime!? I thank the person who took away the reset switch.

ms-spicywolf1

KAWAII!!! … is literally the only caption fit for this shot.

ms-spicywolf2

Lawrence actually starting to blush at Horo’s antics is amusing too.

ms-spicywolf3

I suspect that Horo’s tail sticking out when she gets excited will eventually prove a problem.

Yoko Wakeru Gendai Mahou

Well, this is still pretty lighthearted with the undertones of a plot that may develop. In fact, it went back in time for the second and third episodes to reintroduce how the characters basically came into contact properly. But the roles are still solidly defined. You know, with the whole Yumiko as the ineffectual but powerful fall-girl, Kaho as the deadpan humour girl, etc.

Still, despite the lack of any actual development of any importance, the antics that this lot get up to are still rather bemusing and worth the time.

bs-gendaimahou3

Yumiko seems to have a penchant for accidently losing her underwear. Poor girl.

ms-gendaimahou2

Yep, its just pink fanservice goo. Nothing to worry about at all.

ms-gendaimahou1

At least she has enthusiasm. And of course, the ability to make lots of washpans.

The New Haruhi Season

Oh dear…thank lord the Endless Eight Saga is over. It was FAR TOO LONG, Kyoani! The last four repititions, I just lept through the episodes. Two would have been fair enough. Three…perhaps. But…it…just…kept…on…going… Repeating the same episode over six times, even if it is totally re-animated with subtle differences, was just ridiculous. I know you’re trying to express Yuki’s boredom at the thousands of summer holiday repititions that she had to sit through, but as I say, that could have been adequetely communicated in three episodes. If it had of been three-four eps, I would have been cheering for the resolution. As it stands, however, I was just thinking ‘jeez, its over at last…’.

Now, finally, we’re getting an insight into the Adventures of Asahina Mikuru, the daft ‘movie’ that was shown way back as the first ever Haruhi episode for no reason and then given absolutely no explaination at all in the first season. Back to the fun part of Haruhi. About bloody time.

ms-haruhi1

There was a script, really? Although it is amusing, because Yuki is in fact a magical space alien.

ms-haruhi2

Poor Mikuru suffers alot, as usual, in this episode.

ms-haruhi3

I imagine the blue contact lens was forced into her eye by Haruhi, after all. She looks like she just took a punch.

PandoraHearts

This went on to surprise me from last season, with its obvious Lewis Carroll and Arthur Conan Doyle influences, eventually nabbing the space and its still going in my repotoire as a fun show. To me, it doesn’t look like that they can conclude it in 26 episodes either, but we shall see. The little run in with the Baskervilles, and the fact that Oz has Jack possessing him, not to mention the actual secrets behind the tragedy of Sabrire (why did Glen suddenly go beserk? Does it have to do with the pocketwatch?) and whole Bezurius vs. Nightray rift is still all to be explained, after all.

Also, the last episode I watched was basically a fanservice episode, with Oscar getting everyone drunk, which was hilarious, but had a distinct lack of actual plot development (except Gilbert pouring his worries out, I suppose). Still, its very enjoyable.

sharon-cant-hold-alcohol

Sharon might be cute, but she can’t hold alcohol.

sharon-cant-hold-alcohol2

Suddenly, she switches into Ojou-sama dominatrix mode (complete with Rose Borders!) when drunk. I laughed.

alice-strip

Alice, on the other hand, just decides she’s too hot when drunk and strips.

—–

Anyway, I think that about sorts it for now. Hopefully, the long post makes up for the fairly long absensce, yes? See ya again soon!

Dang, sorry about the delay, folks. Works been totally consuming my time as per usual, and I really can’t get into blogging when knackered after a day at work. Anyhow, its time for another first impression. I’ll try to get them all done in the next couple of days.

Bakemonogatari has just had its second episode air, by and the by. In general, the preview I gave before isn’t exactly too far off the mark. In other words, our protagonist, Araragi, got turned into a vampire, but then was cured by a supernatural problem-solver /slash/ homeless guy, Oshino. The story of how this actually occured will most likely be told in later episodes, though there was a fast, epilepsy inducing montage of things that presumably happened before the start, as the first episodes intro. I also suspect the Loli-pilot-hat-wearing vampire girl is involved.

However, the first two episodes in fact cover the ‘healing’ or whatever of Senjogahara, the ‘paperweight staple girl’, as I’ve named her. Because she has a curse of sorts that makes her weigh just 5 kg. Near the start, she has slipped on a banana peel (cliche!) and ends up flying miles to caught by the protagonist on a stairwell. He delves into the matter, only to be threatened by her and her wide range of stationary to keep it a secret. Which results in him being stapled in the mouth. Ouch.

Of course, she thought this would be enough to shut him up, but didn’t count on the fact that he’s a healed vampire. Though mostly human now, he still has absurd regeneration. So the mouth staple does little. To help her, he then offers to take her to the same guy who healed his curse. We discover her curse is caused by a crab god which eats emotions.

Anyway, some screencaps:
bakemono2

Catch this! Most maidens would love to never gain weight, I would imagine. But then, being 5kg is REALLY light.

bakemono4

Wow, a fully expanded Stanley Knife to mouth is a pretty terrifying thing!

bakemono3

Correcting your grammar whilst threatening someone? Now THATS STYLE!

bakemono5

Whoa! Pocket Dimension of vicious stationary!

bakemono6

How considerate of you. That doesn’t help the fact that it REALLY hurts!

bakemono7

Said Loli-Pilot-Hat-Wearing-Vampire girl is awesome.

bakemono8

Given Oshino’s appearance, you can’t help but question his ability to drive out curses, I suppose.

bakemono-kawaii-staplegirl

Staplegirl gets to be immensely kawaii despite her vicious streak.

bakemono-shower

And also provides a copious amount of fanservice for everyone.

bakemono-lul-wut

A proclaimation that many men would absolutely love to hear from most women, no doubt. I also LOL’ed that she has a stapler and scissor print on her underwear. Says everything you need to know, really…

bakemono9

No really! Notice Oshino has got his proper Kan’nushi outfit on now, Lol.

bakemono-imoutos

Araragi also manages to have some immensely cute little sisters…

Anyway, this show is fascinating. It manages to take a good chunk of horror and mindfuck, and yet somehow make it amusing and surprisingly light hearted, usually in all the little details, from the obvious like Senjogahara’s pocket dimension of stationary, to the subtle, many more of which I picked up when combing through the episodes again for screencaps. Its made a very good impression on me, and I think it’ll a get a slot.
